PalsStory_001: Bandarpunch-Tail of the Monkey
Bandarpunch, which literally means "Tail of the Monkey" is one of the most challenging trek in the Uttrakhand region of the Indian Subcontinent.
According to a famous mythological tale, Lord Hanumana went to the summit to extinguish his tail when it caught fire in the Battle to rescue Sita Devi from the Demon Ravana in Lanka.
The entire Bandarpunch Range has three peaks. To the west is the White Peak at an altitude of 6102m. The White Peak is above the famous Yamunatri Range of Uttarakhand. Then 5km east of that is the mighty Bandarpunch Peak at an altitude of 6316m. Lastly 4km north west of that is the Kalang peak or Black Peak at an altitude of 6387m.
Maj Gen Harold Williams led the first successful climbing expedition in 1950. The first team to summit Bandarpunch Peak comprised legendary Mountaineer Tenzing Norgay, Sergeant Roy Greenwood and Sherpa Kin Chok Tshering.
